Mean airway pressure is the average pressure applied to the lungs across the entire breathing cycle on a ventilator, and correlates closely with oxygenation and lung volume.
Ttotal is the full breath cycle time, 60 ÷ respiratory rate.
Typical for routine ventilation.
Elevated — often intentional to improve oxygenation.
High — watch for overdistension and falling cardiac output.

It tends to recruit more alveoli and increase functional lung volume, giving oxygen more surface area to cross. Too much, though, can overdistend the lungs and reduce cardiac output.
Higher PEEP, higher inspiratory pressure, a longer inspiratory time, and a higher rate all raise it. PEEP and inspiratory time are the most influential levers.
Often around 5–15 cmH₂O in routine ventilation; it is pushed higher deliberately in severe hypoxemic failure to improve oxygenation.
This is the common bedside approximation. Ventilators compute mean airway pressure directly by integrating the actual pressure waveform, which captures ramp shapes this estimate simplifies.
